Antigua and Barbuda. Prime Minister Lester Bird's party Antigua Labor Party won 12 of Parliament's 17 seats in the March 9 election, thereby strengthening its position somewhat. The United Progressive Party opposition party lost one seat and got four seats in parliament.

1999 Antigua and Barbuda

According to Countryaah official website, former Prime Minister Vere Bird Sr., who ruled Antigua and Barbuda between 1981 and 1994, passed away on June 28, 1999, at 89 years old. Bird challenged British colonial power in the 1950s when he demanded higher wages for the workers on the country's sugar plantations. He then led the liberation struggle for several decades until 1981, when the country became independent, and was highly respected by its compatriots.
